SHEET MUSIC & METHOD BOOKS

One question I’m often asked is where I get my sheet music and method books, either for myself or for my students. The simple answer is, everywhere! In the ‘90s and early ‘00s, I used to frequent local music shops and find all of my resources there. But since a lot of people are favoring the online model to book-shopping, most of the music shops I used to shop at have closed as well. As a piano teacher and performer, I rely heavily on Sheet Music Plus. Not only do they have a wide range of method books, they also have urtext editions of music by Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, and so much more. It really is a catchall store for the very beginners to advanced students. I absolutely love IMSLP when discovering new pieces or assigning new pieces for my students. Since shipping takes time, I often send my students to IMSLP to print the first couple pages of whatever piece they are assigned to. That way, they can have a chance to practice before their books arrive. J.W. Pepper is also another great resource, although they mainly provide bands, orchestras, and choral scores. Amazon is also a great way for me to purchase sheet music, but the selection is nowhere near as complete as these other sites. Lastly, I really enjoy learning about new publications and new method books that are new in the field. As such, I subscribe to many publisher’s catalogues, I also attend teachers’ conventions, where I can be one of the first ones to purchase and use new music books for my students.
